Synthetic glucocorticoids can have positive effects on CrF in palliative care and terminally ill patients with cancer due to their
The European Association for Palliative Care recommends short-term use of corticosteroids in palliative care, in particular where CrF is associated with signs and symptoms of anorexia- cachexia syndrome and bone or brain metastases, but it likewise points to the undesirable side effects such as myopathy, depres- sion, and sleep disorders which could increase symptoms asso- ciated with CrF [27].
In palliative care settings, CrF is often combined with multiple other symptoms such as dyspnea, pain, and cachexia [25, 26].
Therefore, the management of CrF should include thorough symptom management as part of a comprehensive palliative care approach [27].
As a major part of this approach, the indi- vidual preferences and needs of the patient have to be consid- ered and the trade-offs between advantages and disadvantages of CrF treatment should be discussed with the multidisciplinary palliative care team [28].
